WORKING AND PLAYING

What do we teach?
At Manchester Road School we aim to provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment in which children question, investigate, discuss and develop the necessary skills and attitudes that enable them to lead rich, worthwhile and fulfilling lives.

In the early years children are introduced to a more play based learning curriculum. Planning is divided into six areas of learning; Personal and Social Development, Communication Language and Literacy, Mathematics, Physical Development, Knowledge and understanding of the world and Creative Development.

Where do we teach?
Foundation Stage
Our Foundation Stage classrooms have been specially designed to maximise the way children of this age learn best - hands on. We have two full time teachers and two Nursery Nurses, all of whom are specialists in early years education.

(Infants - Years 1 and 2)
Children are introduced to a topic based curriculum. The core subjects are Mathematics, English, Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT). Literacy and Numeracy are taught for one hour each day.
The foundation subjects are History, Geography, Music, Art, Design Technology, Religion and P.E.
Key Stage 2
(Juniors - Years 3 - 6)
The same subjects are taught through a more formal curriculum. Staff in both the Infant and Junior departments work together in partnership to ensure continuity and progression. Some specialist teaching is introduced particularly in Years 5 and 6 as we aim to prepare children for transition to Secondary school.
How do we teach?
We believe that to give children the best possible start to the life long learning process, the curriculum should be relevant to them, hands on and interactive. Throughout the whole school we try to give children access to as much first hand experience as we possibly can. This approach is particularly prevalent in the early years. We are very sensitive to the many different ways in which children learn. We use a number of teaching strategies and styles throughout the school to meet children's needs. In our planning we make provision for children of differing abilities, aiming to give access to all through a broad and balanced curriculum, matching tasks to learners. We recognise the diversity of interests and needs associated with ability, disability, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

TOGETHER HAND IN HAND

leaflet_07.gif (4361 bytes) ICT suites
We are very fortunate to have two ICT suites at Manchester Road, one in the Infant building and the other in the Junior building. This provides the facilities for children to cover all aspects of the ICT curriculum and access information for other subjects.
ECO-school
Manchester Road School was awarded ECO status two years ago. At Manchester Road our children are very proud of this award. We believe in promoting care of the environment and good citizenship. Although our outdoor space is limited, staff and children share a vision of how this can be improved which is something we continually strive to do.

Who do we teach?
Manchester Road Primary School is a two-form entry school and admits up to 60 pupils per year (64 in the Juniors). Because of the size of our school we are sometimes able to admit children from outside our own catchment area - it is always worth enquiring.

Come and have a look
Manchester Road Primary School has stood on the same site since 1907. We have a proud history, strong links with the local community and a caring ethos. Parents and prospective parents are always welcome to visit the school by prior arrangement with the headteacher.
