Dear Parent,

Re: School closure due to Industrial Action by members of NationalUnion of Teachers – Thursday 24th April 2008

As a result of a recent national ballot over the Government’s proposals to impose a third successive multi-year below-inflation pay settlement, members of the NUT have voted to take strike action. The NUT’ ballot  covered all NUT members employed in the local authority maintained sector and paid under the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, including all teachers employed in local authority maintained schools, whether community, voluntary aided or foundation schools.

As a direct consequence of this ballot 11 members of the teaching staff at Manchester Road Primary School will be taking industrial action. This means that all year groups bar one are without teachers on that day. I have consulted with the Governing Body and they are agreed that school will be closed for the children on Thursday 24th April 2008. Any staff members not in the NUT (and non-striking NUT members) will be expected to attend for work as normal. I hope that you will appreciate that it is not feasible to find temporary cover for 11 classes and the only decision left open to the Governing Body is closure.

Please note: there will be no After School Care Club on Thursday 24 April 2008.
