Hi, this is Andrew. I was at Manchester Road (or "Manny Road" as I fondly call it) from 2001 to 2007 and was there with a bunch of great people. I never thought I would miss Manny Road, but after two years of Audenshaw I suppose you would too. A greetings to Miss Harkin, Mrs. Phelps Brown, Mr. Piper, Mrs. Hancock (if she's there) and Mrs. Crueden. I found you all to be accommodating and interesting to work with. And may I also say a thank you to my past friends, Jamie Bradley, Kieran Lee, Asher Ahmed, Olivia Brannon and Sarah Hogan. I miss you all greatly as I only got Niall Grimshaw, Connor Nightingale-Monk and Peter Broom, who all have their faults.
Une "Merci" pour un garcon de Audenshaw et de Manchester Road. Aurevoir! (And I like French too lol).

Hii all,
I left Manchester Road in 2001 (So long ago). My Favourite teachers were Mr Piper, Mrs Hancock and many others.
After I left Manchester Road I went Fairfield High School and too be honest it didn't compare to the time I had at Mcr Rd.
My 3 brothers have been at Mcr Rd and the youngest are in yr 3 going into yr 4. Jamie the oldest boy is currently at W.W.S.C. going into yr 9.
I am now In my final yr (3rd) at Ashton Sixth Form college and looking back I can't believe how quickly the time has gone.
Oh yes my mum was a dinner lady at Mcr Rd for a couple of yrs so you may know her....
ok I betta stop writing now before I write an entire essay :)

Dear whoever is reading,

I just wrote to say GOODBYE!!!!! I will really miss this school as I've been here since RECEPTION. But I'm really looking forward to high school as it's a really big move for me. I do hope your nursery area is great and hope more and more people come to such a lovely school - It's true! In the past we've all had many up's and down's, but, we'll all stay friends forever - Right? You see, I'm crying as I write this, do you know why? I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE!!! I'll still see you all though as my mum won't let me walk home myself. I want to say thanks to a couple of people so, here goes:

Mr Piper: Thankyou so much for teaching me this year, it's been lovely and I hope your experiencing all the best at Robin Wood.

Miss Ridler: I really wish I could be in the choir again, but, sadly that's not to be. Thankyou ever so much for helping me with my problems like the mystery of 'the missing name on the CD list'! I'm listening to that now, it's great.

Mrs Woods: Thankyou for sorting out my problems and letting me grow up, (unlike my family) I really needed that help at the time and I may need it again! But thankyou ever so much anyway.

Mr Wynn: Right, I'm very sure EVERYONE says this but I think your a great headteacher and I bet you'll make this school a nice, pleasant place to be.

Miss Curtis: Definitely the best teacher I've ever had, so great you had us for TWO years! I don't know whether I'm true to myself or not but I think I'll miss you the most. You are a nice, pleasant teacher with a good sense of humour and I hope you really like your next year 6 class. (Not as much as you liked us, obviously)

Everyone else: There are too many to enumerate by name, but there's a heck of a lot of them, just as ol' Adge Cutler said back in the day! (Sorry Katie Marsh, Katie?) But it's true, you've all got me through right and wrong so, THANKYOU AND GOODBYE!!!!!!

Sorry this message is so long, I just have a lot to say so, please, please, please remember me! Even The Wurzels aren't the first to pop into your mind! I promise I will come back and see you all one day, I promise to write in this guestbook forum thingy as well. But I have to say one more thing:

It's good to know
You can really
Make a
DIFFERENCE.

I really will miss you all,

Love from,
Rebekah Palmer xxx

I attended M/c Rd Infants & Primary schools from 1949-56. I have class photo's of Mrs Vine (formerly Miss Bailey ) 1953 and Mr Richards class 1956. With the help of Carole Ryder (maiden name) we have managed to put names to all but 2 of the faces. If anyone reading this would care to have copies of these photo's please e-mail me and I will e-mail a copy to you. One of the years at M/r Rd I was in the overflow class at St Andrews on Edge Lane where a few of us would buy 5 woodbines (ciggies) and hide them in the roof of the boy's toilets out in the playground. Problem was when it rained they got wet and we had to put them in the oven to dry. My, were they ever strong after that. Maybe that's why I no longer smoke. Hope to hear from anyone who remembers me.

I used to go to Manchester Road School from 1967 and loved it. I looked at the old pre-fab buildings where I used to be taught by Mr Bleaze and I loved him to bits. I saw the pictures of Michael Gibson, Alan Bradbury and I think Paul Tattersall. I'm sure it is me on the picture above as I recognise the jumper !!!! I lived at 11 Keston Avenue with my brother David and sisters Elaine and Wendy. I remember the following teachers also, Mr Beaumont, Fanny Hallows (needlework) Mr Sharples and Mrs Cronshaw.

Happy hundred year centenary Manchester Road Primary, my school in the late forties. I remember Trevor Bevan, I admired him 'cos he was good at maths and let me copy. I remember same things he remembers too. Don't know why he went past Australia to reside in New Zealand though.
Good wishes to all past and present pupils and teachers. The world's your oyster, GO FOR IT!

I was saddened to hear of the death of Valerie Nuttall - she was a class mate of mine. If you look at the photograph of Mr Richard's class of 1956, Valerie is centre stage second row from the top and I am second from the right, top row between Frank Leach and Gordon ?. Being in the same violin class as Valerie I was well placed to see that she had a talent and was best violinist in the class. She was also a really nice person.

I attended 1947 to 1952, R. Gleaves was the headmaster. My best teacher ever was Tom Finn, a lovely Irish man who had bags of time and patience with us kids. The worst teacher ever was Smethhust. I played in the School football team that won the league under Mr Wolfenden's tuition, we played on a cinder pitch at the end of Buxton lane next to the canal. I still have the photos and the trophy. Happy days!

I was at Manchester Road School from 1952 - 58. My sister, Valerie, was 2 years ahead of me. We both went to Fairfield High School and both became Radiographers. Unfortunately Valerie died suddenly 10 years ago. We both played violin in the orchestra but Valerie was much better than me and continued to play in the orchestra at Fairfield, going on to play in senior orchestras in Manchester & Oslo. My father, Harold, was a parent governor. Still in contact with several old girls so looking forward to the reunion on the 14th July.

Centenary
Having become aware of the school’s centenary I hope the following will encourage others to follow suit from particularly my era at the school even if only to show they can use a computer! I am hoping there are many who will be attending the centenary celebrations the school are scheduling for the 14th July 2007 too.
I shall be watching the school’s web site for more details of the celebration planed and although I reside in New Zealand I have planed a visit to the UK taking in the month of July 2007.
I attended Manchester Road School from March 1944 until July 1952 except for some time around 1946. When I resided in Bispham, Blackpool for health reasons. Then from the beginning of the new school term of September 1952 I moved on to Droylsden Secondary Modern School on Manor Road, Droylsden.
My recollections of my time at the school include:-
• My first classroom in the Junior School building, which if I have recalled correctly was the first on the left when you entered the building from the Junior School playground.
• Going through the multiplication tables in a classroom on the Senior Girls playground side of the Junior School building. The Senior Girls playground was situated between the Junior School and the Senior School buildings.
• A senior school project event for which my personal contribution was to help make a model of an oil well drilling rig and which event was put on display for parents etc…, to view in the school assembly hall.
• A radio being installed in at least one senior school classroom and learning about musical instruments from a program it broadcast. (Redivison? – I think comes to mind as a name associated with this radio – it was I think a cable type radio business and probably a concept similar to cable television of more recent times.)
• A winter when in the senior school’s boy’s playground due to the ice forming on the ground the boys created a long ice slide. This slide went practically the length of the playground. You entered the slide at the Manchester Road side and you slid along towards the Manor Road side of the playground. It went down and up due to the fact the playground surface sloped from the 4 corners of the playground to a centre point where there was a grate covering the drainage pipe set in the ground.
• Senior school Prefab classrooms on part of the junior school’s playground with Mr. Lawton our teacher.
• Mr Lawton’s alleged “over” use of the “black rod’ (cane) by one child’s parents.
• Mr. Lawton organising visits to a Pottery factory in Stoke on Trent and to the Manchester Ship Canal Docks at Salford and an annual week’s Whitsuntide Holiday at the Camp on the hill overlooking Rothesay on the Kyle of Bute in Scotland. The camp holiday he carried on at the Secondary School too.
• Class playing football on Lewis Road Park pitch.
• For at least for a number of matches school first eleven-football team with the goalkeeper coming from our class of Mr Lawton’s.
• Then the move of the senior boys to the Methodist church hall and senior girls to the St. Andrews church hall both on Edge Lane, Droyslden before we left to go to the secondary modern school on Manor Road.
• A confrontation between a pupil and teacher by the stationery cupboard at the Methodist Hall.
• A planned school visit to the Droylsden Milk Depot (possibly to do with the CWS) off Market Street which I forgot about as I played in a football match and a friend from school turned up at home who had to leave without me otherwise he would missed the visit too.
• With no play ground at Edge Lane we had our breaks inside the hall. So found indoor “play”.
For the boys’ one such “play” was to use the tables (also used as desks) as our push penny (football) games. This game comprised two pins stuck into the table at each narrow end of the table for goals and each player having a penny coin and ruler (generally a broken ruler of about 3 to 6 inches long) and the ball was a sixpenny coin.
The idea was very simple hit the penny with the ruler to make it hit the sixpence and knock the sixpence into the goal.
The teachers’ “play” was cards in their staff room!
• Playing cricket between the classes with teachers umpiring and taking a hat trick. We played on waste ground with no grass situated somewhere between Old Farm Crescent and Buxton Lane and not too far from the canal.
Our family resided in The Quadrant, Droylsden. When I left school in April 1954 I started work in Manchester just off St. Anne’s Square for Herbert Watson & Co Ltd. This company’s business was shipping and freight which meant as an office boy I had some duties involved at Salford Docks. I left that employment and Droylsden in October 1958 when I went to New Zealand where I have continued to reside except for 1962 when I resided and married in the Fylde area and worked for a travel company on Fishergate, Preston Lancashire. No matter the time I have lived in New Zealand I still am a fan (atic) of M/C City AFC and watch out too for the Butchers Arms team results. Of course being a “kiwi’ means I am a fan of the All Blacks and any endeavour of a New Zealand sports team or person.

Now some 55 years later I can only recall some names of those who attended the school at the same time as myself and mainly family names…; Milne (who’s family lived next door to the school over the fence by the prefabs), Knight, Morgan (family lived in West Drive), Hackett, Best, Hall, Barton, Tuff, Winston Gregory, Ernie Wall and Jeffery Davies. Although looking at the photographs on the school’s website I can recognize/recall a number of faces but I cannot put a name to the face.
Accordingly I hope more ex pupils will also keep watching for the information the school will publish in due course.

So I am now wondering who may read this of the older generations and who may be attending the school’s centenary from the earlier years

Pupil from about 1959-65 (yikes!-when winters were snowy); lived in Lydgate Road; French lessons started in the 2 "new" classrooms; Mum brought me Ribena through the grey railings of... Manchester Road. What are now houses on Water Lane were allotments, but most of the school buildings are the same: same slates & same brick walls where we lined up before going into class. Happy friendships. Some of us have already passed on ahead, may God Bless you. Great to know the school is well thought of - well done all concerned and Happy 100th in advance! (March 2007)

Just heard about the school's centenary celebration this year via a long standing but not often activated old school grapevine. It's now in my diary and interested to hear more. My mother still lives off Buxton Lane so I drive past the old school several times a year with fond memories. I'm sure my mother still has old class photos which I will dig out next time I visit her. Lost contact with just about all who were there during my time 1954 - 60 (I think).

I really enjoyed my time at Manchester Rd. I was there when Miss Lawrence was Head Mistress. I don't think I could do the job I do now if it wasn't for the positive experiences I had there. I am Assistant Headteacher at King's Norton Boys' School, Birmingham!
